FAREWELL TO PARADISE

(by Jeffrey Rosenthal, 1984)

Long is the list of things we've shared
But now it won't get longer
And the memories of joy have narrowed into thorns
That remind me it will never be again.

T'was simply magic, the chapter we wrote
Each page a success and a smile
We laughed and we loved and we lived in a dream
With no pain 'til the moment you wake.

My mind is tortured by the thought
We should have done even more
But what does it matter, we can't add now
To a painting already framed.

Goodbyes we muttered in a subway car
A quick embrace and I left
Each step away so painfully showed
That happiness, too, has a price.

But shed no tears, my greatest friend
For all good things must end.
